Anything better than the orange chicken? Let’s have a chat. What would you cook if you had loads of oranges? It has been a few times now that I order fresh Sicilian oranges at this time of the year. Now you will say “why can’t you just get them in the supermarket?”. Of course I do! Yet believe me, having fresh local-market-style oranges is a completely different world! Instead of simply making the fresh orange juice in the morning and some orange cake, I wanted to go different this time. So I was looking for something new to try in my kitchen, and then I came up with this amazing Chinese orange chicken recipe. Bear with me!

The orange chicken was a huge surprise to me! The flavor is amazing, the chicken gets super crunchy and the sauce is both sweet and sour. To be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of fried food until I tried this orange chicken. It even looked so difficult to make but the truth is that it is super easy! And what is most important, it is soooooo extremely delicious!

When I tried the first bite of the orange chicken, I was really speachless! I did not expect the chicken to still stay so crunchy when mixed with the sauce. And the flavor! Oh the chicken is salty and the sauce is both sweet and sour. It is the best mix of ingredients, trust me!

Since I love spicy food, I put some more chili pepper in the sauce. In addition, I put some more fresh chili just before serving. This orange chicken is best with rice, yet I love this chicken so much now, that I can eat it without any side dish!

    The Orange Sauce:
  • Get the sauce ready first by heating up orange juice, sugar, honey, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and chili pepper. Heat it for a couple of minutes
  • Take a couple of spoons of the sauce and mix with cornstarch, then add it back to the sauce, mix well and leave to cook for another couple of minutes until it starts thickening
  • When the sauce is ready, turn the heat off and add the orange zest
  • The Chicken:
  • Mix the flour, cornstarch and salt, and leave it in a plate
  • Take another plate for the eggs
  • Dip the chicken into the egg mixture, then the flour mixture, set them aside
  • In the frying pan, heat the frying oil
  • When the oil is hot enough, put some pieces of the chicken (do not put too many as it will be hard to mix) the oil and let it fry for a couple of minutes (continue turning so that it gets fried evenly)
  • When all the chicken is fried, mix it well with the sauce
  • Top your orange chicken with some fresh parsley, chili pepper and orange zest
